Thank you for these comments. The collective experience here—25 years of raw feeding, cats cured of diabetes, dogs thriving into their late teens—represents something the formal literature hasn't adequately captured.
A reader sent my summary to her natural vet for appraisal. His response to Point 11 (the book's claim that cooking benefits dogs' nutritional needs) was blunt: "Total drivel." His evidence: when dogs switch from kibble or cooked food to raw meaty bones, stool volume drops to roughly one-third—indicating far greater digestibility and bioavailability, the opposite of what the book claims.
This criticism deserves acknowledgment. What I should have made more prominent in the summary: Shawn Buckley and Dr. Oscar Chavez are the founders of JustFoodForDogs, a company that sells cooked, human-grade dog food. They acknowledge in the book they "have a stake in the game." Their anti-raw position directly serves their commercial interests.
The USDA data they cite—showing higher nutrients per 100 grams after cooking—is mathematically accurate. Cooking removes water, concentrating what remains. Whether concentration equals superior bioavailability and health outcomes is a separate question entirely, and not one the book adequately addresses.
The book's strength lies in its documentation of the kibble industry: rendering practices, feed-grade ingredients, regulatory capture, contamination scandals, pentobarbital in dog food, mycotoxins in grain-based kibble, and the Pet Food Institute's decades-long campaign against fresh feeding. On those matters, it's well-researched and valuable.
On the cooked-versus-raw question, treat it as one perspective from authors with financial interest in that particular answer. The experiences shared in these comments—and the observations of veterinarians who've watched raw-fed animals thrive for decades—tell a different story.
I’ve been raw feeding my animals for the last 25 years. All I see is good health. No infections from feeding raw, no obstructions or perforations from feeding raw bones. Good long lives, I currently have a 17 year old that looks and behaves much younger, she could easily pass for 8. I also stopped vaccinating long ago. Between the food and the lack of vaccines their health remains excellent for a long time.
Regardless of the purity of ingredients, avoid kibble especially for cats. My wife lost a cat to diabetes years ago. When one of our cats, Juniper, developed diabetes and we had to give him insulin shots, my wife asked the vet, "what's going on? I had another cat develop diabetes." The vet said, we don't know, but we think it might be the food. So my wife researched it on the web, found a vet online who claimed she had cured all cats of adult onset diabetes by getting them off of kibble. Doesn't matter whether the kibble is grain free, it's the conversion of the food to kibble that makes it toxic, at least for some cats.
So we switched Juniper to canned food. Within a few days, he went into insulin shock when we gave him his insulin shot. So we reduced the amount to the lowest possible and next time he went into insulin shock again. That was it, no more insulin, and he lived another 13 years, died at the ripe old age of 21.
We did switch him and our other cats to all raw soon after putting him on canned because about every 3rd meal of the canned food, he'd puke it all up. So he was on ground whole chicken, bones and all, ground up in our meat grinder for those 13 years.
Our dog was mostly raw all her life, eating mostly raw green tripe, with a small amount of lightly cooked liver. She passed at age 15 in 2020.
I'm partial to raw for many reasons. Seems to keep them heathy and gives them a long life. And of all the things they can eat, raw produces poop with the least amount of smell!
but even kibble with no grain or carbs will cause a cat who's genetically predisposed to develop diabetes to do so. Heating their food to high temps and completely drying it out in the process (what they do to create kibble) changes the food in a way to make it not fit for dogs or cats. Kibble is very far from what they would eat in the wild, if they were still in the wild. Cats would be eating small critters like mice, whole and raw. Dogs larger critters, but some dogs might eat the occasional berry for example. As you said, cats are carnivores. Dogs can eat a wider variety. Neither dogs nor cats would cook their food in a very hot oven, drying it out completely and then store it for weeks, and then eat only that food! Can you imagine how we humans would do on a 100% kibble diet?!
WHILE THE FOCUS WAS ON DOGS, IT'S THE SAME WITH DOMESTIC CATS. AND LIMIT SNACKS, UNLESS YOU MAKE THEM. THE CONTAIN DYES. ALL KIBBLE IS DESIGNED FOR 10 YEARS. TRY WATCHING DR. POL RERUNS.
Both dogs, cats, and chickens are carnivores. I get double yokers when they get more meat cooked or raw,
Senior dogs and cats have issues with peeing or pooping in the house around 10 years. Puddle pads don't seem to work and are expensive. They seem to like a rug.
Does the same with horses and cattle without Gates crappy green stuff.
Zoo animals get better medical care than our pets or us.
Thank you for this Unbekoming, much needed. I always scraped off dishes and put those scraps on top of kibble for my dogs, being told every time I should never give people food to dogs, but the thing is, dry pet food stayed in their bowls for days and they wouldn't eat it till starvation kicked in. Then I watched a movie, 7 Years in Tibet, which got Brad Pitt banned forever from China. Therein started my journey.
In the movie 2 starving men, coming off an arduous journey, came across a house where a woman had just put out 2 bowls of food for her Shi Tzu"s who were chomping away. The men pushed the dogs aside and ate all the food. It was then that a lightbulb turned on and I pushed away all advice on feeding my dogs. I started cooking for them.
I cook a pot roast twice a month. In that leftover broth I add carrots, celery, lentils and kale. That's my kibble and I top it with some meat. When they tire of it I switch to sweet potatoes, eggs, fresh pasta, turkey, sockeye salmon and cod. For a treat I buy a 2'long kielbasa from a local butcher and intermittently throw that in when I'm out of pot roast.
All this might sound like a lot of trouble, but really, takes little time from my day. Tantamount to putting laundry into a washing machine and then transferring to a dryer. But, the very best thing I have done for my dogs is to never vaccinate. I adamantly refuse.
I use roast chicken. and marked down hamburger, pork, or beef roast left overs. I can so it would be easy to process a longer stoarge life. I do meat Veggie soup for us. PC canner's many say you can't Water Bath it, to low acid. Easy tsp. lemon juice. Well my Grandma did during the Great Depression.

Mandatory in my state as well. I asked a vet to give me one example of Rabies/Hydrophobia proven to exist in America. He couldn't. I walked out and went to my computer for treatment I thought I needed which prompted me going to a vet in the first place. I was so wrong for trusting a vet. Liars beyond comprehension.
If my dog is hit by a car I will take him to a vet. Nothing else will induce me to take my dog for a so-called yearly vet visit. If they can lie to me, I can do the same. I do.
I told my stubborn husband that he's by the book, 20-year Ret. SCPO, plus 20 years teaching electronics. (MOS was Avionics, same as eletronics Carriers). The military didn't pay if you didn't get your annual Flu shot in the Sick Bay. That is where you got your check. 1958-78. Teaching required it too.
We generally don't argue, He was clueless about Covid. His Eldest did Cancer research at Vandebuilt. When that contract stopped, she started a job setting up labs all across the US. Now at 60 can't find a job, so she works for herself. She's 4 times jabbed, as is his youngest daughter was going on 50, who is now 50, who owns her own IT business. Both have chronic bouts of Covid. Got him to do the 1 J/J. Then we got Newsmax on Dish for news. No MSM.
I'm a Pure Blood, just took the Vit/Min formula, but added Quinine Bark, Quercetin, and upped the Probiotics. Never got sick in 5 years. Pollen season hit hard, Sinus/ear infections, ears full of Hearing Aid earwax that has to be physically removed, Migraine from H. Micosoft did the UNI Gemini hard update, screwed my Libre 3 sensor up, and is still giving the laptop fits. No cookie delete tab.
I never take full rounds of antibiotics. No need. Upped the Citrezin to 2 tabs and flonase generic as often as I needed it. A shot of Scotch for the 3rd day of the Migraine ran my BS up to 400. I'd ditched the Humalog 3 weeks before. Finally had to shut the phone off, change a 5-day-old sensor out. I don't ask for permission. I know how to manage my health if I could only write the Hypothyroid script. Meds are Free at the Base, Express Scripts are 90 with a cheap copay. And Synthroid is name brand, Military WON 'T use the crappy REMOVE FROM MARKET generic because of extreme side effects.
WOW!!, quite a story, and these folks are still alive? They need to get down on their knees and thank the Lord. I wasn't that lucky or patient as you. I was a raped ape. I researched every word, read medical abstracts, listened to all censored medical folks, more research and could find no fault w/their analysis, so nary a word from MSM made any sense. Something was very wrong here. No mention of the supplements I have taken for years that rendered me sickness free for a decade. Then I learned about contagion.
Another lie. I lost family and friends when they took the shot, a total of 8. Above everything else, it is my belief that nothing is more dangerous to the human or animal body than vaccines. A recipe for disaster. And no one ever sees it coming. They'll blame their ill health on what the MSM can come up with to convince you otherwise, that it was never the vaccines.
