I did not know that the pet food industry influenced veterinary schools. I would like to add that our “science research” includes animal torture, which I saw and is part of the reason I had to leave, aside of an attempt to get me to falsify data. As far as a homemade diet goes, my dog (who was also my best friend) had a homemade diet that I prepared on Sundays for the week ahead and she lived to be 18 1/2 years old. Her vet said she was in remarkable shape for an elder dog and her diet had played a big part. She was worth every bit of time, money and effort. Thanks for this.
At some point, I hope we look into the value of love in terms of pet and human health although in such a mechanistic, for profit system, I wonder if we ever will. In working with rescue horses, dogs and cats, I learned from direct observation that it had value as well. Just loving them and gaining their trust as well as an improved diet made a big difference in their health and behavior.
Just a thought, I saw a couple of items about what we "should" feed to our pets in #16 that I would like to add to. I have two Maine Coons and have been feeding raw exclusively for nearly 3 years. I'm not an expert, but "Paws of Prey" is, and that's how I learned to do it correctly. Mariah is on YouTube and has a webpage.
Cats should eat their diet raw. One of the reasons they have kidney problems besides toxic dry food is that they're desert animals. They don't naturally drink a lot. A balanced raw meat diet is approximately 70% water, if it's cooked it takes the moisture away from the meat. When cats eat a species appropriate raw diet they don't usually become overweight, get diabetes or have kidney issues. Be aware that taurine is ruined when grinding meat, so if not feeding chunks taurine needs to be added because cats don't synthesize it.
I don't own a dog, but when looking at the diet recommendations I see something I don't agree with. Although omnivorous, I don't agree with dogs eating grain of any kind. In the wild they're highly unlikely to come into contact with grain. When I see a recommendation of adding vegetable oil to the diet I wonder what should be in the diet that is natural. They would never find vegetable oil in nature. I would feed more protein and some veg and fruit, maybe a 1/3. If the protein has fat on it, don't cut away fat and feed the meal raw. Feeding bones like poultry wings and legs have fat and skin that will up the fat in the diet. Vegetable oil is not food and is highly inflammatory. We shouldn't be eating it either.
Healthy, natural fat is important in their diet because it's full of nutrients. If your pet is overweight you can reduce fat a bit to help with calories.
For those who worry about raw meat, keep your area clean, sanitize after prep and have tools exclusively for this job. The same as we do with preparing meat for ourselves, wash your hands after feeding your furry family members.
I can't tell you how stimulating it is for my cats to pick through their food and enjoy the different bits, and they love crunching their raw bones. It's so good for their mental health, not just their physical health.
My cat eats raw meat and is 19 1/2 years old. I switched her after nursing her mother through renal failure. I felt so bad to have fed that one, cat biscuits all her life, she only made it to 12 1/2. Big difference in the outcome of the different diets.
So true! I've had several cats live to about 20 years and they ate kibble and a bit of table food. I thought about and realized they lived healthy because they were outdoor hunters. They caught a lot and ate what they caught. So they were eating a lot of their natural diet, otherwise I don't think they'd have done so well!
My son has this same problem. I feel bad when people are in that situation. I'm fortunate that my kitties aren't ever kenneled and I'll never take them to a vet again. The vets are required by law to rabies vaccinate and I'm having none of it.
We all need to our part with our vets by making copies of these types of things, studies, get videos in front of them, etc…. If they’re unwilling to read, find another vet if possible. There’s a major veterinary doctor shortage unfortunately. They go to school nearly as long as human doctors with little pay. Unless a specialist of some kind, which is happening in human industry too. They’re not vets to get rich! Trust me. I was a vet tech decades ago and even tho it’s expensive to go, it’s not due to their income. Most is cost in survival as a business with employees and incredible regulations, taxes, etc.
That said, like any human doctors, if they’re unwilling to hear you or investigate, to do the best for their patients, they’re not worth going to! However, they’re so busy that many times they simply don’t have extra time to do this research and study when they have the industry hounding them and they revert back to what they learned which is never the use of natural means! The new vet I just started admitted to changing to Farmers Dog like I did. My dog is acting young again! So that tells me he’s probably open to this sort of information. I’m hoping. But I think for some, it’s helpful if we get it in front of them too. Those that don’t have an ego complex anyway. Same with these kennels and things. Send the info anonymously if you want! Pummel them with information! My point is that maybe if we help to spread awareness, here, to others by leaving comments, etc. we can get it out there. Everywhere you’re able. There’s a vet, I’ll need to find his name again, going before committees proving the vaccines are being far overused and unnecessary. I’m certain there’s other info out there. Keep digging! Non Google! They censor and suppress. Keep posting, commenting, and get this in front of as many people as you can. Don’t give up when it seems like they’re ignoring you. Persevere! If we don’t, who will?
They're not different than MD's in the sense that they see ailing pets everyday and can't open their minds to see the problem. I gently tried to show my new vet, I took in information and showed all the healthy raw foods my cats are eating. I was told by her that my pets and I are a danger to the community and I should never touch my cats without gloves on. I was also told that "she" paid for her education and that pet food companies do not influence vet schools. Like you say, I immediately looked for another vet, this time looking for a holistic vet. This guy raw feeds his show dogs and is great. However, there's one thing I just can't get around, the rabies vax. They're required by law to give it and I'm not doing it. So I'll do the best I can, using natural remedies like CDS and DMSO if needed. Hopefully my kitties will live a long and healthy life without intervention from "well meaning" vets. As far as their income goes... it use to be the way you suggest, pets are big business now and vet care is very expensive. Many have very fancy offices. That's all fine, but I'm not going to participate in their lifestyle. I don't think we can rely on any medical system for ourselves or our pets. Since 2020 people are beginning to figure it out for themselves and are treating themselves and their pets and curing their own ailments. These doctors have had many chances since 2020 to step up to the plate and most haven't. They're great for a broken bone or serious injury, but that's not most people. They haven't got a clue how to help with the disease most people and pets are dealing with. They just write scripts. I'm truly not negative on all of it. I've learned so much and I'm happy to have control of the situation myself! : )
Absolutely! we had a woman who stayed right at our house for 2 weeks to take care of our dog. Bailey was happy not to go to a kennel. And we were happy that he was safe and comfortable, not stressed being without us and in a strange place. It was as expensive as you might think, kennels are expensive too! She just asked that we leave a couple bottles of wine! : )
Fits your style. I'm getting these as I belong to a canning group, they can everything. I wish people would stop doing the Danelions, Or Bees are too important to kill off. My eldest said they've not seen One Honey Bee this spring. I have a backyard of clover, I pick the dead dandelions for my hens. Clover after it, also after the blooms die off. Been to wet to put a shallow bowl with pebbles out for them to rest and recuperate on. But a down bee, if left in a shaded area, will be attended to by the colony.
My Primary is a Master Bee Keeper. I buy his local honey and his non-coated apples and peaches. We are in Strawberry Season. Already done a batch of jam, and am using the leftover juice in my Apple Cider Vinegar in filtered water for my BS/Weight loss. I've gone from 177 lb to 127.8 this morning, NO Humalog in a month, NO Nexium in 9 months. Who says you can't beat Pharma?
Wonderful information. So much fraud in everything these days. I subscribe to a free newsletter called "The Dog Food Advisor". Their tagline is "Expert opinion, trusted advice and the latest industry news. We help you choose the best food for your dog." Plus they stay on top of dog food recalls. I've been reading their information for many years and they are very trustworthy. It's USA focused but I bet some products are marketed/sold in other countries.
You can look up your particular dog food and get the full review and an analysis of the ingredients.
Wild fish of any kind, is the best food we have ever found for our dogs. They have all been long lived. No fish with spines on! Trim the tails to avoid choking.
We eat the fish, and our dogs eat both ends...:)
Once a dog develops a taste for fish, then 'Frozen' makes a good tasty chew-bone and simplifies storage. The heads are the best part; full of oil!
I’m always happy to see these warnings, however the population en masse never will. I’ve been randomly telling people for years about these horrors. You list Halo as decent . I fed that, and expensive Orijen as well, thinking I was giving the best. My Queenslands eyes were bulging and he was growing huge fatty tumors. You could watch him decline and the vet even sent me to an eye specialist because he supposedly had glaucoma. I changed him to Farmers Dog. Yes, it’s costly! It’s 200 a month. Zoo animals, road kill, Styrofoam containers should be stuffed down Anthony Faucis throat
Can I watch that happen?

If it's not for a long period of time to kennel, have you checked out Rover for home visits instead?
Yes there’s individual people too that will house sit and pet sit. Just investigate them!!
