It was sensationalized, thanks to the in your face nature of the promiscuous. The same people holding a parade in assless chaps in downtown San Francisco or New York. Also thanks to the vultures in the news cycle. Obviously it was sensationalized. I live in Northern California, San Francisco is a stain on the state, has been for decades, still is.
I also agree with the claim "no different from heterosexuals". Look at an entire society or population, that averages out the deviant behavior of a small number of large coastal cities in the U.S. That was a reasonable statement.

I read the author as pointing out and trying to excuse or play down 'news of the gays' levels of promiscuity' by calling it exaggerated, i.e. made to seem sensational. It's intended to call up a (FALSE) sense of their behavior as "NORMAL, JUST like heteros! Heteros do it TOO!" Thus, trying to shift 'blame' from normal folks naturally recoiling in disgust and shock as wrong for having that reaction. Trying to create a sense of thw "wrongness" of a normal reasonable reaction: 'normal, hetero' folks were sensationally shocked and disgusted. (Sensation =ing feeling...)
The author seems to be calling out normal reactions as "badly done" (hence "sensationalized"; made to (seem to have) been normal, (the behavior being 'excused' creating a negative sensation).

The description of HIV/AIDs as a semen oxidation effect is interesting. There was a case from the early 1990's in B.C., Canada, Kobe ter Neuzen vs Dr. Gerald Korn, in which the recipient of donor sperm at his fertility clinic developed AIDS. The viral transmission was assumed and damages assessed.
A statistical review of AIDS incidence in exclusive homosexual couples vs a sample of multi- partner MSM would be interesting in defining the oxidative toxicity of receptive anal intercourse.
