Both wars demonstrated “Full-Spectrum Dominance”—the doctrine that America must control every domain of potential conflict: land, sea, air, space, and information. The human costs—over a million dead, millions more displaced, societies destroyed—mattered nothing against strategic objectives. The “War on Terror” was in reality state terrorism against anyone resisting American financial and military hegemony, prosecuted under cover of responding to the September 11 attacks.
Question 26: What were the origins and consequences of the 2008-2009 financial crisis, and how did the government response benefit banking interests at public expense?
The 2008 financial crisis originated in the systematic fraud and speculation enabled by decades of deregulation. The 1999 repeal of Glass-Steagall, which had separated commercial and investment banking since the Depression, allowed banks to gamble with depositors’ money. Massive trading in derivatives—credit default swaps, mortgage-backed securities, and other complex instruments with nothing to do with actual economic productivity—inflated the financial sector to many times the size of the real economy. Banks extended mortgages to unqualified borrowers, bundled the loans into securities rated AAA by complicit rating agencies, and sold them to investors worldwide. When the housing bubble burst, the entire edifice collapsed. Major financial institutions faced insolvency; credit markets froze; the economy plunged into the worst downturn since the Great Depression.
The government response was to bail out the banks that had caused the crisis. According to one estimate, $19 trillion in various forms of support flowed to the financial industry. Banks deemed “too big to fail” were rescued with taxpayer funds while homeowners lost their houses to foreclosure. Not a single major banking executive was prosecuted for fraud. No substantive reform of the debt-based financial system occurred; within years, the same practices resumed under different names. The Dodd-Frank Act created the appearance of regulation while leaving the fundamental structure intact. The pattern repeated in 2020 when COVID lockdowns crashed the economy: the Federal Reserve created trillions in new credit to prop up financial markets while ordinary people faced unemployment and eviction. Each crisis demonstrates the catastrophic weakness of bank-centered finance—and each response enriches bankers at public expense while leaving the system poised for the next collapse.
Question 27: What are the competing theories about COVID-19’s origins, and how did the pandemic response affect American governance, civil liberties, and the economy?
The origin of COVID-19 remains officially unknown. Early claims that the virus emerged from an animal market in Wuhan are no longer taken seriously. Attention has focused on the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducted “gain-of-function” research—experiments that deliberately enhance pathogen virulence. Expert testimony before Congress stated that gain-of-function research has “no civilian practical applications,” focusing suspicion on bioweapons development. Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded gain-of-function studies at Wuhan through intermediaries after such research was restricted in the United States. Alternative theories point to the U.S. military laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland, suggesting the virus was “deliberately weaponized and released in China to weaken that country’s economy and military.” The initial outbreaks in China, Iran, and northern Italy—nations with adversarial relationships to American interests—have fueled such speculation.
The pandemic response concentrated power in the executive branch and public health bureaucracy while suspending constitutional rights. Lockdowns shuttered businesses, schools, and churches; travel was restricted; public gatherings were banned. Almost six million employees were laid off. The Federal Reserve created trillions in new credit, driving unprecedented inflation. Vaccine mandates required citizens to accept experimental injections as a condition of employment, education, and social participation. Social media platforms, coordinating with government agencies, censored dissenting medical opinions. The pandemic became the single most impactful event of the Trump presidency, destroying his economic record and enabling unprecedented expansion of government power. Whether the virus emerged accidentally, was released deliberately, or originated from American rather than Chinese laboratories, the political consequences proved transformative—accelerating trends toward surveillance, censorship, and centralized control that had been advancing since September 11.
Question 28: How did the 2014 Ukraine coup and subsequent events lead to the current proxy war between the United States and Russia, and what does this conflict reveal about American foreign policy?
The 2014 Maidan coup that overthrew Ukraine’s elected president Viktor Yanukovych was orchestrated by American officials working through the National Endowment for Democracy and affiliated NGOs. Victoria Nuland, then Assistant Secretary of State, was recorded discussing which Ukrainian politicians should lead the post-coup government before the uprising succeeded. Her husband Robert Kagan had co-founded the Project for the New American Century; Nuland herself later allegedly participated in planning the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. The coup installed a government hostile to Russia and to Ukraine’s Russian-speaking eastern population. When eastern regions resisted, civil war erupted. The Minsk Agreements of 2014-2015, brokered by France and Germany, promised autonomy for the Donbass region, but Ukrainian leaders later admitted the agreements were merely a device to buy time for military buildup.
The current conflict represents the culmination of thirty years of NATO expansion toward Russia’s borders—expansion that American diplomats had promised would not occur. Russia repeatedly warned that Ukraine’s NATO membership would constitute an existential threat. When diplomatic efforts failed, Russia intervened militarily in February 2022. The United States and NATO responded with massive arms shipments, intelligence support, and economic warfare through sanctions—a proxy war designed to weaken Russia without direct American military engagement. The Biden administration, populated with neoconservatives, declared its intention to fight “to the last Ukrainian.” The death toll approaches half a million. The conflict reveals American foreign policy as unchanged from the Wolfowitz Doctrine: prevent any Eurasian power from challenging American dominance, control energy resources, and maintain the dollar’s hegemonic status. Ukraine is a pawn sacrificed to these objectives; its people are dying for American strategic ambitions.
Question 29: What has been the experience of Montana’s Flathead tribes—the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d’Oreilles—from ancient times through allotment to present-day adaptation, and what lessons does their survival offer?
The Flathead tribes have occupied western Montana for at least 15,000 years, since before the last Ice Age when megafauna still roamed North America. The Salish people speak a language family extending across the Pacific Northwest, where their ancestors built a complex civilization based on salmon fishing and hunter-gatherer abundance. As climate warmed and glaciers retreated, the tribes settled in the mountain valleys drained by the Clark Fork River. Smallpox arrived before the first white traders, killing an estimated one-half to three-quarters of the Salish and Pend d’Oreille bands in the 1780s. Unlike the Plains tribes who fought wars of resistance, Flathead chiefs decided early that they would not make war against the United States but would do their best to adapt. The Jesuits established St. Ignatius Mission; the Ursuline nuns ran boarding schools; some Indians converted to Catholicism while maintaining traditional spiritual practices.
The Dawes Act of 1887 and subsequent allotment policies divided communal lands into individual plots, opening “surplus” land to white settlement. Much reservation land passed to non-Indians. Yet the tribes survived and adapted, learning modern self-governance, upholding their rights in dealings with federal, state, and local governments. Through an active program of purchasing non-tribal reservation land as it comes for sale, the tribes now own a majority of reservation property—recovering what allotment took away. Salish Kootenai College educates tribal members. The tribal cultural committees preserve language and tradition. The Flathead experience offers lessons: survival sometimes requires strategic accommodation rather than hopeless resistance; education and economic development within traditional values can preserve identity; communal land ownership provides a foundation that individual ownership cannot. Whatever Indians today can do to elevate themselves above the pressures coming from the outside world, the better chance they will have of facing the future. The same applies to all of us.
Question 30: What monetary reforms does the author propose to address the systemic problems created by fractional reserve banking and Federal Reserve control, and how would the NEED Act transform the American financial system?
The NEED Act—National Emergency Employment Defense Act—introduced by Congressman Dennis Kucinich in 2011 would abolish the Federal Reserve System and restore to constitutional government the sovereign power to create money. A Monetary Authority within the Treasury Department would serve as a central bank, a depository for federal funds, and the point of origin for direct issuance of U.S. currency. The Federal Reserve infrastructure would be absorbed by this public authority. Private banks could only lend money beyond their deposit base by borrowing it first from the Monetary Authority according to established guidelines. The federal government would provide direct funding for infrastructure projects, for paying down the national debt, and for interest-free loans to state governments. Speculative trading in derivatives and all forms of money laundering would be banned.
This reform would end the fundamental problem that has plagued American monetary policy since the founding: private control of money creation through fractional reserve banking and compound interest. Under the current system, the money supply expands primarily through bank lending, with interest payments flowing to private bankers. The national debt compounds because government borrows what it could create. Inflation enriches those who create money while impoverishing those who earn it through labor. The NEED Act would break this cycle. Federal expenditures would be generated through direct spending authorized by law, as was done with the Greenbacks. The national debt would gradually be paid off with no further need for government borrowing. A citizen’s dividend could supplement wages, reflecting actual economic production. Credit would become a public utility serving the common good rather than a mechanism for wealth extraction. The catastrophic weakness of bank-centered finance has been exposed repeatedly—in 1929, 2008, and 2020. The NEED Act stands as a ready alternative, waiting for political will to implement it.

I bought Richard Cook's "Our Country, Then and Now" in January of this year. I don't think I made it past the first chapter.
The author made what at first seemed to me to be some very extravagant assertions, and he provided no references. Whenever I tried to verify something he had said, I did, in fact, find that his version of history was accurate, but it took me so long to look up his sources (days, in some cases) that I gave up and donated the book to the library.
