When I was a kid, cats ate what they could catch, and dogs ate table scraps.
My son had a friend who owned a pet food store. She sold high-end pet food. She got into it because she loved animals and wanted to help pets be healthy. She had a fantastic business with animal chiropractors, acupuncturists, and all sorts of wholistic practitioners for animals. She retired some years ago. My son learned a lot from her, and it saved his dog from a lifetime of itching and allergies. His dog lived to be nearly twenty.
If you go to Chewy.com and look up the ingredients in cat food and dog food, you will find that the “foods” are basically meat-flavored chemicals with dozens of synthetic vitamins and “nutrients” added in. Not much is real food, and there are awful things thrown in.
I have two cats and a dog. I give them actual meat - beef, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon. We sometimes get rotisserie chicken and shred it. The dog gets eggs, vegetables, and sometimes rice and leftovers. She doesn’t get anything bread (wheat and yeast). I’m looking for cheaper cuts of beef and chicken. I buy canned tuna and salmon from Walmart or elsewhere.
This is at least equal to or cheaper than buying canned pet food. It is more work. I reason that anything I give them is better than canned pet food. I probably need to evaluate and see that their nutritional needs are covered. Some people go to real extremes with their dogs' diet.
Animals who are fed bad foods develop itching, allergies, skin, kidney, fungal, digestive, and poop issues. They may develop diabetes or thyroid disease. They tend to pee in the house. They also have bad odor. They are miserable, and vet bills are costly and don’t resolve anything. Except in emergencies, of course. Parasites make animals ever hungry and cause crazy and aggressive behavior.
Homeopaths have homeopathic vaccines which are safer than mainstream vaccines (I’ve been told). If the animals require vaccines for say, getting spayed or neutered.

He has natural ways of dealing with pet health. He has videos on using parasite meds in cancer for both animals and human animals.

Additionally: Chickens, cattle, pigs, and horses are fed unnatural diets. Chickens fed wrong don't lay eggs. Cattle are sickly and have intestinal issues and miscarry. Horses have problems with pregnancy and delivery, and many horses are dropping dead. There's a woman on Substack who has a small pig farm. She's having trouble finding a reasonable feed for her pigs.
I gave up cereal years ago. Boy, do I miss it. It was my go-to on my crazy busy days with no time to eat and for late at night to quiet the growls before bed. Just recently I found (glory be to God) a organic, non GMO, no preservatives, nada, cereal. My go-to is back!!
I keep it on top of my fridge now, so I can see it and not forget to eat it. Last night I flipped open the freezer and the box fell scattering cereal over the floor. My 2 dogs ran to clean up the mess. When finished, they looked up to me as if to say, "that's it?"
My little guy who turns his nose up more times than not and walks away is nothing close to the big guy who would eat shit on a stick if you covered it with chocolate. Jumping at our heels 1st light or tripping you as you walk for breakfast every day, today I decided to give them cereal for breakfast. A bowl of cereal with raw milk. The licked cleans bowls could have gone right back into the cupboard. I thought better of that and washed them instead.
