Author's Note

The comments produced four points worth addressing directly. Two prompted additions to the essay since publication; two require a longer response here.

The brain-glucose objection. KoalaPower raised the common concern that fasting deprives the brain of glucose. Garth Mando responded with the case of Angus Barbieri, the Scottish man who fasted for 382 days under medical supervision at Maryfield Hospital between 1965 and 1966. He took only water, tea, coffee, and vitamin supplementation. He lost 276 pounds and remained mentally intact throughout. The case is published in the Postgraduate Medical Journal (1973). I've added the Barbieri case to the fuel-switch section, along with the underlying mechanism: once metabolically adapted, the brain draws the majority of its energy from ketones, with the liver covering the residual glucose requirement through gluconeogenesis. The notion that the brain requires constant dietary glucose does not survive examination of the clinical record.

The cancer stem cell question. GailDR identified an apparent contradiction in the mechanism section. If the PKA brake is released during fasting and stem cells start dividing, what stops cancer cells from benefiting? The answer is differential stress resistance, documented across two decades of peer-reviewed work by Valter Longo's lab at USC. Healthy cells respond to fasting by downregulating growth signaling and entering a protected quiescent state. Cancer cells, whose growth signaling is constitutively activated and cannot be turned down, continue trying to grow in conditions that no longer support it. The PKA brake release activates dormant healthy stem cells. It does not activate cancer cells, because cancer cells were already past every brake before fasting began. I've added this to the mechanism section.

On fasting as the primary modality. GailDR also asked whether there are documented cases of patients using prolonged water fasting as the primary modality and achieving complete remission. The honest answer is that the cases I cited are all combined protocols. The cases that come closest to fasting as primary modality come from Filonov's Siberian clinic and the broader Russian clinical fasting tradition, where the documentation takes the form of clinical case files rather than published case series in the Western format. The essay's thesis is that fasting is foundational, meaning it sits under and supports every other intervention, rather than that fasting alone is sufficient. The combined-protocol cases support that thesis. A case for fasting as sole modality would require different evidence than I have assembled here, and I am not making that case.

On honey and the apparent contradiction. Big E asked how the fasting-and-cancer argument squares with my previous writing on honey. The cancer context specifically changes the calculus on any glucose-bearing food. Honey is approximately 80 percent sugar. For a healthy person managing terrain factors, honey has real medicinal use, particularly in unprocessed forms with their enzymes and trace minerals intact. When active cancer is present and cells are running the Warburg metabolism, that same honey feeds the disease. The prior posts on honey were not written with active cancer in mind. The dietary framework that applies when cancer is present is ketogenic, not honey-inclusive. The fasting protocol described in this essay takes precedence over any standing nutritional advice from elsewhere in the body of work.

Thanks to everyone who engaged substantively. The work is better for it.

Thank you so much for clarifying the issue about honey and cancer. Much appreciated, as is all your work!

This is why fasting has always been frowned upon by the medical establishment. If sickness is your business, you don’t promote wellness, and you do everything you can to put people in search of wellness - off the scent… hence the “3 square meals a day” model, constant focus on food, fast food, and addictive food. And you certainly don’t talk about the cellular cleanup process involved in autophagy/fasting. So many elements have been employed to put people ‘off the scent’ of wellness, instead promoting a dominant establishment of credentialed “know-it-alls”, who actually know very little.

"Off the scent" Excellent term. Like folks who think McDonald's is healthy because it includes all the food groups.

"When the sacred receptacle of the eternal soul is breached from without or failing from pestilence within, the physician priest hears our confessions of terror - forgives our nakedness, binds the wound, purges the putrid humors and the soul is home again safe - until the next time. The power that lies in this position is terrifying. Our fear of death and the intermittent shadows of dis-ease that provide the premonitory reminders of it's imminence are the currency of the trade. It is no wonder that good men tremble at this and evil men pursue it."

Excellent analysis. I'm new to this discipline, having done ~1/2 dozen water fasts up to 5 days. What I've experienced so far: the body is surprisingly resilient. No fatigue. No issue exercising, daily, for hours. Mental acuity. Productive work. Creativity. Cheerfulness! Better sleep. Easy resumption of eating. Sure, the occasional hunger discomfort can be a little tiresome. For those of Faith, fasting is important. Connect. Happy Fasting!

I actually accidentally fasted water the other day and watched how my body transformed for the better: https://unorthodoxy.substack.com/p/why-i-dont-drink-water

Fasting is how the body heals itself intermittent fasting is a great way to get started with fasting.

All true - I began intermittent fasting several months ago and the results have been remarkable.

Great article. The Ayurvedic medicine teaches that the body will wall off lumps, tumors to protect the body and that the lump should be left alone. Using herbs etc to let the body repair itself and then the lump can be dissolved on its own. Also it is sad that the few institutes that were curing cancer here in the U.S. using different methods like ascorbic acid IV and nutrition and fasting have had to move to places like Mexico. Our medical industrial complex is truly evil.

We need to be very careful with synthetic vitamins tho. Especially at high doses. Medicine girl did an article on this & the lies of using synthetic vitamins & how we should make no mistake, big pHARMa is all in the supplement aisles as well. She said I can guarantee you that you are not deficient in synthetic vit C, like citric acid, We are not deficient in folic acid, we need folate, etc. I used to think the IV nutrition stuff was great too but after reading her articles it just makes sense as to why she warns against it. She has articles on B12 as well, it’s as fascinating as this article was. I highly recommended you give it a read. Our bodies were not designed to hold all that fake supplementation. May give the illusion we are doing better but over time & at high doses….😬

Jhunter's avatar

I will also say that if anyone actually does make the statement “ I can guarantee you that you are not ………..” they are trying just to sell themselves and you might want to put on your critical thinking cap because NO ONE can guarantee anything about another unique individual person as far as our health. Since the direct assault of vaccines into our bodies have disastrous consequences, (for example) who knows really what is going on with another person . I know my own body better than anyone.

Jhunter's avatar

Mar, I totally agree that vitamins are a scam and make big money. I see the term “vitamin” as a misnomer and we've been indoctrinated into understanding it in the way the system wants you to see it. “Vitamins” are just organic compounds required by the body in small amounts from the diet. It all comes down to not trusting our bodies. And the system has indoctrinated us into that also. I would not advise anyone to “shoot up” with ascorbic acid but I think there is a huge difference when IV ascorbic acid is being used in a clinical setting with professionals that know what they are doing for people with cancer who have chosen life over deathly chemo drugs. It's a blessing that at least there is choice. If I had cancer I would never go to allopathic medicine because they WILL kill you. The IV method is utilized along with nutrition, fasting etc that has to be under guidance. I have read a few things on medicine girls substack but personally was not impressed… just my opinion.

Dr-

Fascinating article! Thank you! If I am understanding correctly, what you are saying is that cancer is not parasitic but a metabolic imbalance condition? Does this metabolic condition then create a parasitic condition which fasting can thus eliminate? Or are these two separate things entirely? Can you please opine?

A my next question is not related to Cancer, but to another disease, which I believe any possible curative processes has also been suppressed. I say this because, I always question when big influence and big $$$$$ is involved.

I don’t know if this is another area of specialty for you, but I have a lifelong friend diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). It started with hoarseness in his voice, which he at first attributed as being allergy related. Now 3 years later, he is in a trial study in Canada for slow progression of ALS with monthly injections which, in my opinion, is another lie propagated as empty “hope” in a vaccine laden with poisonous toxins.

My friend is still fully functioning in all capacities except, not being able to speak clearly with the regularity of a normal sounding voice and rhythm. He can still process things mentally with sharpness, clarity and comprehension and complete other tasks. At this point, all but his ability to speak and becoming more easily tired are the main symptoms (that he has shared with me).

We know this disease is heinous because you are literally trapped within an otherwise “functioning” body as your CNS go haywire and your ability to speak, drink, swallow and walk deteriorate rapidly. We have known several clients and others over the years who have passed after being diagnosed with ALS within the 1-2 yr mark. It’s difficult to watch the deterioration.

Are there any articles on this disease you can share or information and protocols for treatment? Will fasting as you wonderfully explained above, be an answer to correcting what is attacking the body?

There has to be better answers that are being suppressed. I refuse to accept the lies, because I know God created our body’s in His perfect image! And that means having the faith in the miraculous ability to heal itself!

God bless,

Margaret

A Midwestern Doctor discussed using DMSO for ALS in this section of an article titled: How DMSO Heals the Brain and Transforms Neurology. The extensive evidence behind DMSO's ability to treat 'incurable' neurological diseases — and how to use it.

Thank you!!! The video shown is compelling evidence although, the ALS person doesn't really go into detail as to what all was being affected by the disease progression...Still, a real person describing the before/after affects of DMSO use is helpful! I will forward this along to my friend.

I have a good friend who lost her grandfather from ALS & her father passed away recently from it & his progression from diagnosis to death was exponentially fast😭now she’s talking with a dr who’s asking her if she wants to get tested to see if she has the gene for it or possibly her 2 boys or her older brother….it’s all too much to bear, like a dark cloud looming over her & her family. I’ve been trying to find an answer to that as well, I want to see her free from this fear & able to know there are things that can help that the current sick care system will not tell her about. I have heard that HBOT & possibly peptide therapies can help, but I’m not 100% on those or even how to go about getting those things started. Plus, how expensive that stuff is & im sure most insurance plans won’t even cover it🫩it would be so wonderful to see studies of fasting with ALS patients. Tysm for asking your question. I’m gonna look into the articles the other people have left you already & hope unbecoming will answer you soon🙏🏻praying for your friend & praying in hope that Father will crush our current medical industrial complex & usher in an age of His healing all across this nation because we need it so badly😢🙏🏻in Jesus mighty Name-Amen!

Check on High Dose Thiamine (HDT). Robert Yoho has a substack article devoted to it. He thinks of it as related to Parkinsons. I am using it now for voice issues, and it provides relief.

Look into DMSO for assistance with ALS.

I have read about DMSO and possible use for ALS, but noting I have come across says anything specific. Looking for more concrete evidence...

I found it, it took a bit of searching. Couldn't remember which channel I had seen it on. It's in one of the videos, half way through the article a man specifically talks about his improvement using DMSO for ALS. Peace and healing

I have studied dry fasting. The book “The Phoenix Protocol Dry Fasting for Rapid Healing and Radical Life Extension”, by August Dunning, is a good starting place. I have dry fasted for 72 hours, although the doctors in Russia assisted people to dry fast for 11 days, with amazing results.

Michel Deladoey wrote “Dry Fasting Revolution: The Practical Guide”, copyrighted in 2024, which is more recent than the books I have read on dry fasting. I will be reading it at this time. I don’t believe I have cancer, but my body is in crisis. Lyme disease, complications of MTHFR, cell damage response, heavy metals like mercury. Attempting to manage these disorders simultaneously is overwhelming. There is strong evidence that dry fasting can address all of them concurrently.

What a fabulous article.

I was in bed for 3 days with abdominal pain and didn’t eat, only consumed water. On the 4th day I went to the emergency department of my local hospital and had a CT scan and was subsequently told that I had a mass. When I asked what that meant, I was told it was most likely cancer (how irresponsible!). On day 5, still no food and water. I felt remarkably better but was scheduled for a colonoscopy to investigate ‘the mass’. The colonoscopy found that I had a perforation in the sigmoid colon and ‘the mass’ was an ulcer that the body formed to plug the hole, as it were, protecting the body from sepsis. I believe the 5 day water fast saved my life.

Thank you immensely for this very informative and comprehensive explanation of cancer and fasting. My father’s mother, my father, and now my mother have had/have progressive cancer. I have a huge responsibility now to my mother, and my grandchildren to understand what is needed to keep the human body healthy or how to repair it when it is time to clean up the dusty system. What God has given us through self control and wisdom are pretty incredible tools! Many thanks!!!!

Superlative essay on fasting, Unbekoming. I know this information to be true, and do have some experience with fasting. I recently was mistakenly age-estimated at a very flattering number. My response was, " the Lord is the health of my countenance." Fasting is a solid Biblical feature, which is why I decided to use it. I have zero cancer markers/cancer cells according to my "family doctor", not seen in person since 2020... ( she is hiding out in another city obviously, post Covid.)

Once you get used to fasting, it is actually enjoyable. The first time I fasted, I went three days and nights without water or food... a dangerous fast I was later told, but it changed the trajectory of my health and my perceptions significantly. I am daily at war against the use of added sugar in folks sketchy "diets", aka excess food consumption involving sweetened foods, and in staples particularly. The food supply is dangerously over sweetened. I note that 'old-timers' speculated that when their fellow workers in mining and timber camps started consuming extra sweets, they were predictably short lived, a finding consonant with my observations of folk that I knew who did indeed have cancer, and died from it. They craved sugar, in any form.

Sugar, added to food is killing people. Particularly obscene is the profoundly deadly overuse of "biggies", soft drinks purveyed in fast food operations. It is sometimes difficult to obtain a healthy drink with a hamburger... the big high fructose "biggie" soda is almost 'mandatory' when ordering fast food. I think the blatant overuse of sweeteners is killing and maiming people... another addiction, a huge money maker, but done on the backs of the poor and the uninformed. Thank you for your valuable work. I will use it for good.

MarBots78's avatar

I agree on all this! Not only is added regular sugar dangerous but all this “zero sugar” crap that just replaces it with synthetic forms 🤦🏻‍♀️and ppl fall for this garbage that it’s “healthy”! They are just as dangerous if not more dangerous! Our bodies simply cannot break this synthetic toxic trash down & I try to tell ppl but they are so addicted, fake sugar is literally a damn drug & most ppl just don’t wanna hear it because they are ruled by their taste buds🫩I have done a 2 day fast before & will try it again & I think I will be talking to my body throughout this time. The Lord really did lay it out in the Bible, & Jesus Himself said “WHEN you fast” not if you fast. 😎🙏🏻

From the posy: "Hardin Jones, a Berkeley biostatistician, completed a twenty-five-year study comparing treated and untreated cancer patients. His finding, presented at the American Cancer Society Science Writers’ Seminar in 1969 and never seriously refuted, was that untreated patients lived on average four times longer than those who accepted conventional treatment.⁸ Quite some statistic: "untreated patients lived on average four times longer." Very interesting post, by the way.

One of the drivers of the obesity/metabolic syndrome epidemic, in addition to the promotion of carbs and seed oils, was snacking. Mainstream dietitians even pushed frequent small meals to diabetics, ensuring constant hyperinsulinemia. The principal benefit of fasting is the suppression of insulin secretion, which opens the gate to oxidizing stored body fat for energy. Fat burning should be our default condition--it's far more efficient than carb burning in regard to ATP production; it provides a constant supply of energy along with ketones, the preferred substrate for brain and heart, and generates 30% less CO2 (acid).

Turning down insulin inhibits cell proliferation; 70% of cancers are strongly correlated with obesity. Fasting certainly makes sense as a foundational approach to cancer.

I'm curious about anorexia; a ubiquitous symptom in cancer patients, even those not exposed to chemotherapy. Could this be the body defending itself by forcing a fasted state? Of course anorexia is viewed as a negative by mainstream oncology, and is treated with industrially-produced fake food supplements such as Ensure, which will ensure a more rapid demise. Allowing obese cancer patients with anorexia to autodigest and live off their stored energy makes sense to me. Modest supplementation with electrolytes, healthy fats such as coconut oil, and easily digestible protein, makes sense to prevent muscle wasting.

Absolutely spectacular! I have been practicing IMF - Intermittent Fasting for

about 5 years. In the past I have done longer fasts of a week and 3 weeks with amazing results for Spiritual and Religious purposes, but the health benefits becoming undeniable.

I have become a believer in the power of healing that results from fasting. The whole mind, body, soul and spirit are connected & manifest in ways that are undeniable. I’m sharing this with the hope it will kindle a fire in people to commit to the practice to heal and PREVENT sickness and prevent cancers occurring.

My experience with 16/8 fasting combined with eating less but higher quality of foods is incredible. The result is increased energy, stamina, endurance clarity of mind & all senses, most liberating to realize that less is more.

The result is self affirming and also inspiring. Documented and well put here in this article that our bodies are a divine creation designed with abilities to heal, repair and do surgery on itself! All thanks and praise for this work! For me always the Glory goes to GOD for His Intelligent Design! Fast on folks! 🙋

Footnote: Once a Type 2 / insulin resistant myself I found: Carbohydrates, Starch is a Hidden CARB, as is alcohol that converts to sugar in the body: that said

Refined SUGAR IS POISON ☠️ ancient cultures knew this and we are ignorant of this fact. High Fructose Corn Syrup is in everything esp “LowFAT” products and BTW we need animal fat and cholesterol for every cell function and our BRAINS must have fat. It is why Dementia is a pandemic. No wonder Cancers have increased we are Addicted to SUGAR in this country.

Yes! Loved this! All the fake sugars doing it too! 😝and we are def designed to heal! Praise The Lord Most High! I loved this article & so many of these comments from this community! Amen!🥰😎
